FAST becoming one of the Gold Coast and Northern NSW's best must-do pop-up events, The Design Collective features local designers, vintage and retro collectors, live musicians and gourmet street food. The Design Collective is owned and managed by Matthew Whalley and Kat Creasey, who have proved a successful business can travel and bring life to many communities.

How did The Design Collective begin?

We started The Design Collective with the vision to create roaming, family-friendly events that could pop up anywhere and everywhere -to showcase handmade, designer and vintage stalls. Then the street food element really took off for us and it has been our focus for the past two years. We have grown an online following bigger then we expected in the space and our shoppers follow us wherever we pop up.

Why are you different to other similar pop-up markets?

We are vibrant, diverse and own and make our own event equipment. We have a vintage caravan that we have turned into a stage, hundreds of funky retro-chairs and umbrellas for people to relax on, a matching mobile bar and a very loyal, 100-vendor strong list that follows us wherever we go.

What's the secret of your success?

Strong branding, positive attitudes, saying, "yes let's do it” to anything and everything and creating our own vision and styling consistent with our events and our social media following. We have a good name for big-numbered events and we work for our vendors' success and people enjoying themselves. Coming back is just a huge bonus.

How do people go about exhibiting?

We are always on the scout for upcoming designers and mobile chefs. People can apply via our website and we will respond with a list of available events they can join.

How did the first market in Ipswich - at Ecco Ripley - go?

Our vendors and our customers really loved the set-up. We received nothing but positive feedback and many are asking when the next one is.

What's the line-up of events in the near future?

We are focusing on regional and rural towns that haven't experienced the street food truck movement.

We are heading to Toowoomba, Yamba, Grafton, Byron and Northern Rivers region and we are hosting a series of Spring Music in the Park events at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast.
