JAMES Packer has donated $250,000 to the Australian Republican Movement.

The billionaire donated $50,000 early this year and then a further $200,000 recently, making it the cause's largest donation since Malcolm Turnbull, founding chair of the movement, gave almost $3million before the republic referendum in 1999.

Fairfax said ARM chair Peter FitzSimons would not confirm the Packer gift but said: "We are going bloody well, and will make some announcements in due course. But you ain't seen nothing yet.”
