TENNIS: Eight of the city's most dedicated coaches and officials will be recognised at a special tribute morning on Sunday.
Ipswich and District Junior Tennis Association secretary Stanley Cuthbert is thrilled to be an inductee alongside lifelong friend and mentor Laurie Hasted.
Cuthbert and Hasted will have courts named after them at the Chermside Road tennis centre along with Margaret Daniell, John Manson, Merv Walker, Graham Brown, Gary Williams and Gary Rogers.
The Ipswich and District Tennis Association is a non-profit organisation run by a group of volunteers.
That's why Cuthbert said he spoke for the other inductees in appreciating the latest honour.
"The IDJA has decided to honour eight of its members by dedicating a court to each person who has contributed many years of support to the club in administration and volunteer work,'' Cuthbert said.
"These people have made a difference and created affordable tennis for families.
"One of the inductees Laurie Hasted was recently mentioned in (Queensland and Australian tennis great) Rod Laver's memoir.''
Daniell has served as secretary for 20 years.
"I once asked her why she did it for such a long time,'' Cuthbert said.
"She just said it was because she enjoyed the smiles on the children's faces when they came to tennis.''
Former Ipswich West Moreton Tennis Association president Manson and patron Walker served on tennis committees for over 60 years.
They gave valuable advice and support on fundraising and planning for the future.
Another president Brown doubled as a court curator for more than 10 years.
Brown spent hours watering and preparing the courts for play next day.
As a former president, Williams has led the modernisation of the playing surfaces in the nineties. He is remembered for his drive and enthusiasm to bring this project to fruition.
Current president Rogers wears many hats. He manages the Hot Shots programs, night fixtures and Saturday afternoon fixtures.
Rogers has been involved in Saturday coaching programs for many years.
Sunday's special ceremony starts at 10am.
